About
Jerry Huntsinger, DAEP
Jerry’s passion for horses has driven him to depths of learning that most would be reluctant to follow. He is passionate about education and helping others along in their journey with horses and in life.
Today, Jerry offers expert hoof care services, in-depth consultations, and hands-on instruction through two-day workshops. Whether he’s working on horses, advising owners and professionals, or teaching students through the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry (IAEP), his goal remains the same—to empower others with the knowledge and tools to support healthier, happier horses.

God did not create horses to suffer — God loves all His creation

Jerry’s journey with horses started at a young age. Watching horses being trimmed and shod only fueled his curiosity about the equine hoof. Before he finished high school, he had worked with several conventional farriers who allowed him to pull shoes and do finishing work.
But Jerry wanted more. In 1998, he enrolled in a conventional farrier school at Oregon State. There, he was exposed to a completely different side of the industry. With the vet school just minutes away, he would frequently observe procedures and ask veterinarians questions—many of which went beyond just hoof care. He completed his BWFA Journeyman 1 certification and went on to work in the field for the next 12 years.
Like many young farriers, Jerry encountered his fair share of challenges, trying to solve a puzzle without the right instructions. In the early 2000s, he was drawn to the growing excitement around barefoot trimming, wondering if that might be the answer. But he was quickly disappointed. He knew that God did not create horses to suffer—God loves all His creation. For the next 13 years, Jerry explored different methods, sometimes even mixing methods. He had the opportunity to work with several elite veterinary schools to further his knowledge of the equine foot.
Then, in 2023, Jerry’s life changed forever. He was involved in a serious bike accident—not just bumps and bruises, but a near-death experience. He was revived and sent to a trauma hospital in Oregon for rehabilitation and recovery. During his recovery, he came across a post about KC La Pierre and began researching Applied Equine Podiatry. He soon realized that God had given him a new opportunity to help horses. In the fall of 2023, Jerry attended his first AEP five-day course and began his online studies.
By February 2024, he had completed his online coursework and by June, he had finished his fifth AEP five-day course earning his Diploma of Applied Equine Podiatry (DAEP). Just 10 days after becoming a DAEP, he started his advanced courses, aiming to complete his ADAEP certification in early 2025.
Those who know Jerry can testify to his deep love not only for horses but also for people. So when the opportunity arose for him to become a licensed two-day instructor for the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry, he didn’t hesitate—he signed up without a second thought. He completed the two-day instructors course in January 2025 and is now teaching two-day courses throughout North America.
Jerry is passionate about education and helping others along in their journey with horses and in life. He is not hard to find—he’s either working on clients’ horses, teaching for the IAEP, or spending time on the road with his beautiful wife, Julia.
