What to Expect at Your First AEP Appointment
Applied Equine Podiatry made simple, step-by-step.
Trying something new for your horse can feel overwhelming — especially when it comes to hoof care.
You might be wondering:
Let’s break down what a first Applied Equine Podiatry (AEP) appointment actually looks like — so you can feel confident and prepared.
1
Observation & Intake
Before we ever pick up a hoof knife, we start by looking at your horse as a whole. I’ll assess:
We may also review X-rays if available — this gives us insight into internal hoof alignment, which is the foundation of AEP-based care.
2
Balance-Based Trim
Next comes trimming — but not the way you may be used to.
AEP doesn’t just “remove excess growth.” Instead, I apply the High Performance Trim (HPT) method, developed to gently realign the hoof capsule with internal structures. This promotes natural hoof function, comfort, and stimulus.
Many horses move better immediately. The goal is not perfection in appearance, but functional change and long-term comfort.
3
Support Tools (If Needed)
Some horses benefit from added support tools like:
These help protect the hoof as it adjusts and improve circulation or stimulus during recovery or transition.
4
Plan & Follow-Up
Before I leave, we’ll talk about:
We may also check in periodically to reassess balance and progress if needed.

A huge part of what I do is teaching. I’ll explain what I see in your horse’s hooves and what we’re working toward — so you always understand the “why” behind the care.
